MacDonald made seven trips to the Rockies, each August from 1924 to 1930, and, as Duval writes, the artist’s affection for the mountains grew with each visit: “MacDonald certainly found peace and joy in the Rockies...On September 4, 1928, on the day this lot was painted, he wrote, ‘If it is possible to make reservations in Heaven, I am going to have an upper berth somewhere in the O’Hara ranges of Paradise.’”
