The Urban Toronto Landscape in Art

Within a realistic work of art, an artist presents both place and time. While the specifics of the location and historical time frame being depicted may not be revealed absolutely, the viewer is presented with a snapshot within the painting's frame. While the uninhabited Canadian topography is well represented in a large percentage of our country's most widely recognized artwork, the portrayal of the Canadian urban landscape is equally important as it provides us with a view of the country's populated areas. These views display a visual history of Canada and its settlement through the perspective of the individual artist, bringing the painter's own personal history and experience with the subject into the fold.

The "10 Commandments" of
Evaluating Works of Art for Auction

Every six months, hundreds of works by Canadian Artists are offered for auction across the country. In the days leading to the feverish bidding in the salesrooms, the paintings, prints, and sculpture are presented during public previews. The individual lots to be offered share the wall space of the room during the previews, allowing interested clients to take a physical look at the pieces they hope may soon be part of their personal collections. One wall of the preview room may contain twenty to thirty different paintings, many of which may appear, at first glance, to be similar. However, a review of the auction catalogue can show that while two works of art may be similar in size, medium, and even subject, their auction estimates may be worlds apart. One small winter landscape may be offered with a presale estimate of $1,000-1,500, while a second may carry an estimate of $300,000-400,000. What is the difference? How does a specialist arrive at an auction estimate? In this article I present ten factors, or “commandments”, which play a significant role in the evaluation of a work of art for auction.

Interesting Moments in the Life of a Work of Art

A painting’s lifespan is comprised of many moments which shape its history. In this article, we take a look at eleven Canadian works of art and a notable factor (or “moment”) which adds an interesting element to the history of each of the paintings. The moment might involve: the details of the creation of the work of art; the acquisition or exhibition history of the painting; or even the resurfacing of a work, previously thought to be lost. In each case, the moment adds an alluring quality to the painting, presenting an interesting back-story to add to the subject matter within the frame..
