Highlights from 28 - 29 November 2006

A 19th Century painting depicting the immediate aftermath of a Habitant Sleigh Accident and small works by the Group of Seven were among the highlights of Joyner Fall Auction of Important Canadian Art. The two-day auction attracted fierce competition between bidders both in the packed auction gallery as well as international bidders, participating by telephone.

According to Harper, the mid-nineteenth century traveller in lower Canada faced many risks. A "serious hazard for winter travellers were the blizzards". Harper, referring to this particular painting, writes that, this "...blizzard painting is punctuated with oaths: the driver has been upset by a brash fellow in a hurry who forced him off the track into the ditch."

Duval, writing about MacDonald's Algoma trips, states that in the "small, on-the-spot oil sketches created during his three trips, we already find the astonishing impact Algoma had upon him as an artist. Precisely observed and brilliantly drawn with a free, loaded brush, these little panels reveal a new creative confidence and technical assurance. MacDonald painted mostly on millboard panels, a bookbinder's board from Brown Brothers in Toronto. His son prepared those for him with a coat of shellac."
